History
The town was named after a prominent farmer, Richard Holmes, whose family resided in the area for almost a century. The family’s estate once stood where the MacDade Mall now stands.
The mall was opened in 1969 and has grown to become a landmark in the county. Two of its main anchor stores include the Kmart department store and Acme Markets supermarket. The retail shopping mall saw its best days from 1980 to 2000. It had quickly grown from a mere five shops to over 35. Many shows frequented the mall, including the sports collectible show, Phanatic, which came during the holiday season.
The construction of Interstate 476 in the early 1990s instigated the mall’s downfall. They now had access to larger malls in the surrounding areas. This caused many retailers to pull out of the mall. In 2006 the mall began to stop renewing leases of its tenants. Many vanished, but many opened in other locations.
In 2007, the mall became the video shooting site for the film “The Lovely Bones.” The mall was decorated with 1960s decor, and many flooded the area to catch a quick glimpse of Mark Wahlberg or Susan Sarandon.
