The borough of Media is located in Delaware County and is the county seat, just west of Philadelphia. Media was incorporated in 1850 and had an estimated population of 5,500 based on the census of 2000.
History
Though the area has records going back to when William Penn settled in nearby regions of Pennsylvania, the area was mostly rural up until the 20th century. Soon after William Penn was elected, proprietor of the colony of Pennsylvania by King Charles II of England in 1681, land in the town was bought and settled.
During that time period, the land was considered a part of Chester County but was later divided into Upper Providence and Nether Providence in 1684. In 1789, the eastern portion of Media became a part of Delaware County and later was split, sectioning off four farms that would then become the borders of Media with approximately 480 acres of land.
In 1854, the West Chester and Philadelphia Railroad was constructed and offered transported through Media towards other boroughs and towns that helped the economy greatly.
In June 2006, Media became the first town in the United States to receive fair trade certification, joining over 300 towns in Europe.
